This is the sketch that we gave to our artist, Andrea Laguzzi, as concept art for the cover of "The Big Fat Mermaid," and as a teaser to introduce "The Big Fat Mermaid" on our Facebook page.

Lily White and the Horrible Dwarves

The character of "Tricky" in was modeled after Danny DeVito's character, "Frank," in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."

Work for this story initially began about ten years before its release.

The name for the character of "Hunkules" was especially difficult, and was initially a joke. Other options included 'Ashley' and 'Lance.'

"Lily White" was originally named "Too Pale." We (the authors) both accidentally refer to Lily White as Too Pale sometimes. We're still not sure that the name change was for the best. (Just kidding, of course. Too Pale sounds stupid and was always a placeholder for a better name, which was fortunately provided by Charlie Ward.)

A verse in "Hunkules' Plan" read better when her name was still "Too Pale"
There she stood on the highway,
I heard her angry yell;
and I was thinking to myself
this girl is crazy
and her name is Too Pale.

There is a line in the story that reads:
“Hunkules,” he said, “If the the Queen has died then her sister, the Duchess of Norbury, is next in the line of
succession. You are just a slave.”
Norbury is a location mentioned in the legendarium of J.R.R. Tolkein's Middle Earth.

The telling of 'Lily White' was originally cruder, and was toned down and cleaned up gradually as the decision was made to make the story more accessible for younger readers. It's a little less funny this way, but we'd like all readers to be able to enjoy the story.
